Hemorrhoids

Overview

Hemorrhoids are swollen blood vessels in the rectum or anus — similar to varicose veins. They're extremely common (about half of adults experience them by age 50). They can cause bleeding, itching, and discomfort, but are rarely dangerous. Most cases improve with simple lifestyle changes.

Symptoms

1

Bright red blood on toilet paper or in the bowl

2

Itching or irritation around the anus

3

Pain or discomfort during sitting

4

Swelling or a lump near the anus

5

Mucus discharge

Common Causes

Straining during bowel movements

Chronic constipation or diarrhea

Sitting for long periods (especially on the toilet)

Pregnancy

Obesity

Low-fiber diet

Self-Care Tips

Eat high-fiber foods to keep stools soft

Drink plenty of water (8+ glasses daily)

Don't strain or sit on the toilet too long

Exercise regularly to prevent constipation

Use a warm sitz bath for 10–15 minutes for relief

Avoid heavy lifting

When to See a Doctor

See a doctor if bleeding is persistent or heavy, if hemorrhoids don't improve within a week of home treatment, or if you have severe pain. Always get rectal bleeding checked to rule out other causes.
