Bloating & Gas

Overview

Bloating is that uncomfortable feeling of fullness or swelling in your abdomen. Everyone experiences it occasionally, but persistent bloating can be a sign of an underlying condition like IBS, SIBO, lactose intolerance, or celiac disease. The good news is that most causes are treatable.

Common Causes

Swallowing air while eating or drinking

High-FODMAP foods (beans, onions, garlic)

Lactose or fructose intolerance

SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth)

Constipation

Self-Care Tips

Eat slowly and don't talk while eating

Avoid carbonated drinks and chewing gum

Try a low-FODMAP diet for 2–4 weeks

Walk for 10–15 minutes after meals

Avoid artificial sweeteners (sorbitol, mannitol)

Consider probiotics

When to See a Doctor

See a doctor if bloating is constant, accompanied by weight loss, severe pain, blood in stool, or if it started suddenly and doesn't go away.
