Fatty Liver Disease
Overview
Fatty liver disease (NAFLD) means too much fat is stored in your liver cells. It's the most common liver condition worldwide. Most people have no symptoms, but over time it can progress to inflammation (NASH), scarring (fibrosis), and even cirrhosis. The good news: early-stage fatty liver is reversible with lifestyle changes.

- Mild pain in upper right abdomen
- Enlarged liver found on exam
- Elevated liver enzymes in blood tests
Common causes
- Obesity and overweight
- Type 2 diabetes or insulin resistance
- High cholesterol or triglycerides

- Genetic factors
Self-care / next steps
- Lose 7–10% of body weight gradually
- Exercise 30 minutes, 5 days a week
- Avoid sugary drinks and processed foods
- Limit saturated fats
- Get a FibroScan to monitor liver health
- Control diabetes and cholesterol
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if you have risk factors (obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol) for a liver health check. Get a FibroScan if your liver enzymes are elevated.
